Subject:
IKARUS C42B: BIG wheel axle
Affected:
All IKARUS C42 B with the new BIG brake, serial numbers 0302-6476 to 0405-6604
and a gusset plate 5 mm thick.
Reason:
A gusset plate connecting the wheel axle to the shock absorber has ruptured on a
wheel axle with the new BIG brake and a gusset plate 5 mm thick.
This can result in a failure of the main landing gear.
Action:
Carry out an inspection of the gusset plate for cracks according to the
instructions below.
Include this inspection in the normal 50 hour inspection.
Replace the wheel axle if necessary.
Compliance:
Inspection to be undertaken before the next flight and subsequently every 50 hours.
Mass and balance:
No alteration
Accomplishment instructions:
In order to carry out the inspection, the wing must be lifted and the lower M10
hexagonal bolt of the shock absorber loosened. The examination must be carried out
using a magnifying glass with a tenfold enlargement. Should cracks be found, the
wheel axle must be replaced before the next flight.
After completing the inspection, the screw should be re-tightened with a torque of
approx. 20 to 25 Nm. The work may be carried out by a qualified person.
Should the above-mentioned defect occur, the airworthiness of the aircraft is so
badly affected that it may only be operated once the appropriate action has been
properly undertaken.
