Service bulletin
SB 42-10 / 04-05
Subject:
IKARUS C42 and C42B: Elevator bearing block.
Affected:
All IKARUS C42 and C42B with an aluminium elevator bearing block.
Reason:
Cracks have been discovered in the elevator bearing blocks of two IKARUS C42B
aircraft.
Action:
- Carry out a visual inspection of the elevator bearing block for cracks in the area of
the crease. If cracks are found, replace the elevator bearing block.
- Check the diameter of the washer (2/3 inch or 1/2 inch) under the elevator bearing
block. If the washer’s diameter is less than 17 mm (2/3 inch): remove the
polyamide limit spacers and carry out a visual inspection of the area around the
screw-holes for cracks. Replace the washers with V2A "body washers". If cracks
are found, replace the elevator bearing block.
- Include the inspection for cracks in the vicinity of the crease in the normal 50 hour
inspection.
Compliance:
Before the next flight
Mass and balance:
Not affected
Accomplishment instructions:
If the attachment screws of the polyamide limit spacers are removed, they must be
replaced by new M6 stop nuts.
Torque: approx. 13 - 15 Nm.
The work may be carried out by a qualified person.
Should the above-mentioned defect occur, the airworthiness of the aircraft is so
badly affected that it may only be operated once the appropriate action has been
properly undertaken.
